magnolias in april

If trees have an adolescence
it is in the spring blooming time
so fragrant, so flirtatious

full of delicacy, a softness and
sudden unfurling to the world,
a vulnerability to touch

and full too of clamor and scent,
brash against the static gray structure
holding them up in the sky

while they peal and shout Beauty!
into the air, and Love me, also
and Notice me, quick

before leaves, before breezes
before the heat.
But then, such wondrous green.
